We are a Year 1 class at Nelson Central School, Nelson, New Zealand. Most of us are 5 years old,
except for our teachers, Tracy and Sam and our teacher aide, Victoria, who are a little older. This blog lets you know what we
have been up to and what our next learning steps will be. We love to find out what people
think about our class so please get typing and leave us a comment.

Week 6 Term 1

This week 2 more parents, plus a baby brother, came in and shared stories with us at the end of the day. We always enjoy these special story times. If you would like to share a story please sign up on the list on our class notice board.

In writing times we have been busy ilustrating our publised stories  and......
...learning another 'tricky' word to add to our collection.
In art we have been adding the features to our portraits and prepared a background of warm and cool colours for the finished works to be mounted on.
We played some memory games this week which was also a good opportunity to practice our skills of turn taking and relating to others.

On Thursday Lilly brought in some Monarch butterflies on a swan plant. We already have 2 cocoons and hope to eventually see the butterflies emerge from these.
We did some great observational drawings of the cocoons as well.
This video clip describes the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly...it is amazing to watch.

We had a visitor from another animal group on Friday when Matty the water snail made an appearance in class.

This picture was taken whilst we were out and about looking for things that we could see around school as part of our probability work in maths. ...just such a fun picture I could not resist adding it to this blog post!
Earlier in the week a mysterious masked friend arrived in class. this gave us an idea to do mask making in Discovery Time this week.

Take a look at the masks in this clip plus a whole lot more sharing and learning that went on in Friday's Discovery session.

  1. Hello Room 10,

This is Fin's Opa again. Hello Fin!

Wow. Six weeks of term are gone. Already you are more than half way through this term and have only 5 weeks until the Easter holidays.

I liked the masks you made. Some were a little scary!

And I wonder how long you will have Monarch butterflies flying around for. Last year, we had Monarchs around the whole year long.

    See ya
