Week 7 Term 1

This week in maths we have been learning to count sets of objects and write the number in each set.
We looked at the Gingerbread Man story in statistics and in pairs sorted objects that we would see in the story, might see and would not see.
We tried  a new game of lacing to help develop our fine motor skills and make our fingers strong for writing.
We have now settled in to our routine of reading books from the class library  each day when we come in from lunch, next we  need to learn how to put the books back tidily!
Our sounds for this week were 'm' and 'd' can you guess which one we were learning about in this circle session?
On Wednesday Crystal's amazing speaking dog, Kaos, came to see us . I don't know who had the most fun, Kaos having so many tiny hands patting him or us having the chance to make a new canine friend.
In art we looked at mixing a main colour with black or white to make tints and tones. Sam is planning to make these colour samples into something very tasty, can you guess what that could be?
There was a new, slimy, squidgy fun activity in this week's Discovery Time, take a look at the photo movie below and see if you can spot what it was.

Week 6 Term 1

This week 2 more parents, plus a baby brother, came in and shared stories with us at the end of the day. We always enjoy these special story times. If you would like to share a story please sign up on the list on our class notice board.

In writing times we have been busy ilustrating our publised stories  and......
...learning another 'tricky' word to add to our collection.
In art we have been adding the features to our portraits and prepared a background of warm and cool colours for the finished works to be mounted on.
We played some memory games this week which was also a good opportunity to practice our skills of turn taking and relating to others.

On Thursday Lilly brought in some Monarch butterflies on a swan plant. We already have 2 cocoons and hope to eventually see the butterflies emerge from these.
We did some great observational drawings of the cocoons as well.
This video clip describes the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly...it is amazing to watch.

We had a visitor from another animal group on Friday when Matty the water snail made an appearance in class.

This picture was taken whilst we were out and about looking for things that we could see around school as part of our probability work in maths. ...just such a fun picture I could not resist adding it to this blog post!
Earlier in the week a mysterious masked friend arrived in class. this gave us an idea to do mask making in Discovery Time this week.

Take a look at the masks in this clip plus a whole lot more sharing and learning that went on in Friday's Discovery session.

Week 5 Term 1

Here are a view glimpses into another busy week in Room 10.
On Monday Finn's dad came in at the end of the day to read us a story. This was so much fun that we would love to see other people coming in to read a story. There is a sign up list on our notice board for anyone who would like to take part in this.

We are also ready to have parent helpers in during lesson times. If you would like to come in and help by listening to children read, preparing activities, sticking work into books and a whole range of other tasks, please have a chat with us. Again there is a timetable on the class notice board to sign up for a regular slot.
In maths this week we made a graph about our pets. The most popular pets were cats and the most unusual was Kaydyn's water snail.

We have continued work on our portraits by adding the correct skin colours. Our next step is to add the details.

In ICT we learnt how to use the Tuxpaint program to draw a colourful pig. Check out our drawings and stories on the Kidzstuff blog linked in the side bar of this page. You can download Tuxpaint for free at this site http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/

Friday was the much anticipated Purple Cake Day. There was so much going on and plenty of happy faces. The school raised over a $1000 for the Purple Cake Day charity, well done! You can get a feel for what we got up to on Friday by watching this video.

This week we had our first trip out of school when we went to the Sunstroke exhibition at the Suter Gallery. The children were so well behaved and engaged by the work. A big thank you to all the adult helpers who came along with us and remember you can go and see the exhibitions at the Suter for free on  Saturday. Have a look at what we got up to.

Back in the classroom we have started work on our portraits. First we practiced altogther on white boards, learning about the proportions of our faces and we used a mirror to see what our own faces looked like.

Then we drew our faces on large sheets of paper. We will be painting the faces next week.

It was great to see so many of our Room 10 families enjoying the school picnic on Tuesday evening and the weather was perfect.

Our tricky words for the week were 'me' and 'my' we have been practising making the tail of 'y' hang underneath the line like a possum tail.

In maths we continued our work on graphs by looking at which months our birthdays are in. Watch out for the results on display in the class later this week.

On Friday we enjoyed another Discovery Time with a focus on turn taking, a skill covered by the 'Relating to Others' key competency.
