We are a Year 1 class at Nelson Central School, Nelson, New Zealand. Most of us are 5 years old,
except for our teachers, Tracy and Sam and our teacher aide, Victoria, who are a little older. This blog lets you know what we
have been up to and what our next learning steps will be. We love to find out what people
think about our class so please get typing and leave us a comment.

Week 3 Term 1

This week we have been learning some new ways of remembering the number sequence to 10. We played bingo in pairs and wrote numbers to 10 in chalk, some of us even carried on to 20...well done!

In literacy we have been exploring the books on offer in our class reading corner and also practising the 'Pink Pig' poem that we learnt as part of our work on the sound 'p'. Check it out on the video below.

We have been writing using playdough, little white boards and the ipad as well as in our draft writing books.

Look out for some of our spider stories that we wrote to accompany these 8 legged creepy crawlies. You can check out our individual spiders and stories on our Kidzstuff blog using the link on this page.
In ICT we have been learning how to use the digital camera including portrait shots, head shots and macro shots. The following pictures were all taken by the children.

In Week 2 we began our maths topic on Statistics by making pictograms showing the different colours of hats and home packs in our class.

Later on we practised our new skills by making pictograms of different types of insects.

In art we printed apples as part of our work on the sound 'a'.

We practiced the tricky words 'to' and 'I' in many different ways.

On Wednesday afternoon we had great fun having a taster session run by kelly Sports.

On Thursday the milk monitors from Year 6 showed us how to fold our milk cartons so they can be recycled and reused to make roof tiles for homes in the 3rd World.

To help strengthen our fingers and develop our fine motor skills for writing we practised popping the bubbles on bubble wrap..very calming for us all!

We also worked on our fine motor skills by finger painting our names. Have a look at the display in the class entrance and visit the Room 10 Kidzstuff Blog using the link to the right of this page to see your child's own work.

In Discovery Time in Week 1 we focused on 'including others.'

This week we worked on 'taking turns', both these skills which are part of the 'Relating to Other's' key competency.

Week 1 Term 1

Welcome to our Room 10 blog where you can see some of the things we have been up to each week and what we will be learning the following week.
This week we have been learning some of the class routines and expectations including where the boundaries of the school play ground are....
...how to line up correctly in class....
... and how to sit in whole school assembly.
We have also been busy making new friends and helping everyone settle in to the new school year.

Thank you to everyone who has sent sun hats and water bottles to school this week. If it is easier for you sun hats can stay at school, we will collect them in before we leave work and pop them out on the children's pegs again in the morning. Water bottles should be sent home on a Friday to be given a good wash. Please remember to label bottles and hats with your child's name and Room 10.

In week 2 Sam is teaching Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Tracy is teaching Thursday and Friday
Have a safe and happy week Tracy, Sam and Victoria
